‘From a torch on the logo to Olympic flame!’
Over 2000 students are engaged in 36 kinds of sport in 60 sport sections at the University: 1 Merited Master of Sports of Ukraine and 16 Masters of Sports of Ukraine, World Class, 33 Masters of Sports of Ukraine and 200 Candidates in Masters of Sports of Ukraine.
SSU students, Master students and graduates are included to Ukrainian national teams of different kinds of sport. They have repeatedly become winners of All-Ukrainian championships, World and European Championships and Cups, World Universiades, Winter and Summer Olympic Games.
SSU Master students Kedzhau Niabali (judo), Ihor Bodrov, Oksana Shkurat and Vitalii Butrym (athletics), and also graduates Anna Plotitsyna and Serhii Smelyk (athletics) presented Ukraine at the 2016 Summer Olympics taking place in August 2016 (Rio de Janeiro).
In summer 2016 SSU students-judo players successfully presented our University at the Third European Universities Games held in Croatia. Artem Khomula, student of the second course at SSU Medical Institute, won gold. Dmytro Tsiukh, student of the second course at SSU Faculty of Technical Systems and Energy Efficient Technologies, won silver, and Vasyl Sampan, student of the second course at SSU Medical Institute, won bronze.
At the beginning of August Mykola Kozhukhov, Master student of SSU Academic and Research Institute of Law, won bronze at Sumo World Championships 2016 in Mongolia.
For the development of physical culture and sports the University has modern material and technical resources, including swimming pool, stadium, specialized rooms for sports choreography, martial arts, table tennis, rooms for sport games and gyms, shooting range, playfields with artificial turf, rowing and ski resorts, club of intellectual sport games etc. Sanatorium Complex “Univer” operates at Sumy State University. In 2013 house care center for athletes as a clinical base of SSU Medical Institute has been used for athletes’ rehabilitation.
The University cooperates with 54 sports schools for children and young people. About 500 young athletes attend SSU sports reserve school.
Up to 2000 international students study at SSU. Over the past two years teams of different kinds of sport have been created exclusively for international students. At the University international students are engaged in the following sections: football, mini football, handball, basketball, table tennis, badminton and martial arts.
International students’ football team took the second place at Sumy Summer Championships in 2016.
In 2015 the team won the first place in Barsa League.
Handball team of Medical Institute that mainly includes international students took the third place among Sumy HEIs in 2015.
International students engaged in wrestling, kickboxing and boxing win medal places.
